Ahh...
Miki. The main character and the one who started it all. Like Meiko,
she's also a character that many can really love and really hate.
Unlike
the rest of the women on the show who are considered beautiful,
Miki isn't suppoused to be. Instead, it's her bright, naive and always happy personality
that makes her shine and what makes all kinds of men fall in love
with her. She can always manage to make you laugh, she's always
there to help, and with even the slight touch of a tease, her temper
can be worked up. Her face, like Ginta's, quickly shows her true
emotions to others. As You had said, she's very pure. She doesn't
hide her feelings. In other words, she's very "uncomplicated".
And it's because of that, the he loves her so much.
But
Miki is also VERY insecure. Everytime You even looks, touches, or
talks to a girl, she immediatley thinks the worst. That he would
break up with her because the other girl was either more beautiful
than her or that she just can't compete. She has to be assured MANY
times over that everything is OK.
The
one reason that the Marmalade Boy manga is slightly better than the
anime is Miki, herself. The manga version of Miki is much more mature
and much more sure of herself. The anime made her a bit weak and as Yoshizumi-sama
noted, a bit more tearful. Actually, a lot more tearful. Miki sheds a LOT of tears. |
Many
fans say that she's very needy. Do I agree? Maybe...
Before You went to America, he asked Miki if she could wait for him because she's all he has... When
You was in America, she missed him terribly. Although she understood (eventually, all thanks to Satoshi)
why he had to be there, she still wanted him to always be with
her. She missed everything about him, especially the sound of
his voice and she just couldn't face the fact that she was alone.
When she went to America to visit him, she broke off their relationship
because You wasn't willing to go back to Japan with her. But doesn't
she know how she had hurt You by all this? And even when she had
broken up with him, she always stayed in his mind, no matter what.
Anju and Jinny were there, yet to him, it was always Miki. But
Miki, needing somebody because she was "tired emotionally"
went to Kei.
When
You came home, although he was jealous, he knew that Kei was the
one Miki loved now and it was Kei that made her happy, so he did
not interfere. He took it like a man. Then at that camping trip,
it was Miki who was jealous of You and Anju because they were
having such a great time with each other. It was her wondering
why she was still thinking of You because she already has Kei.
But doesn't she know that You is hurting even more because of
what she had done to him? That she basically broke it off with
him because he wasn't there to support her and she just couldn't
wait. And then what happened later on, when she told Kei she loved
him, yet ran to You.... because it was he and only he that she
loved... Poor Kei. Not only did she break the heart of her own
love, she also broke the hearts of Ginta and Kei... Yet everyone
can still forgive her.
This
is the anime Miki's one true fault. She plays around with the
hearts of many, as Arimi had pointed out to her once. Other times,
she is also a bit selfish. Sure she has a VERY big heart (like
forgiving people like Jinny and Suzu for what they had done),
yet sometimes it seems she's only thinking about herself and not
how the other person or people might be effected by what she's
doing.

There's
something about Miki though that has an affect on everyone. She's
far, FAR from perfect but she did grow a bit throughout the show and
became what she should have been from the very beginning. She
became much more sure of herself, she began to have confidence
and became more trusting when it came to her relationship. She
finally began to mature.
She knows she can never be as beautiful as the other women, she
knows she has faults, she knows she just has a "simple"
personality compared to everyone else but despite all that, she's
just so full of life and spirit. She's always willing to help
and to be there for everyone. She was there for Meiko and she
was also there for Arimi and Ginta. And isn't it just fitting
that her name means, "BRIGHT?" Because that's what she
is, there's no other word to describe her but that. She's the
kind of person, though still easily angered when teased, brightens
up everyone and she almost always finds that silver lining behind
all those dark clouds.
