It's raining. Miki's
thinking about Na-chan's announcement that he's resigning
and wonders if Meiko knows. Miki tries to call her but
she remembers what Meiko had said to her, so she doesn't.
Miki starts to cry.
Meiko's in her room. Her parents are arguing and yelling.
The father doesn't want Meiko out of the house and wants
the mother to stay with her. The mother disagrees and
they fight more.
Na-chan is outside the Akizuki residence. He pushes
the intercom button and asks the maid if he could talk
to Meiko and her parents. The maid tells him that Meiko's
not allowed to see anyone. Her father angrily tells
him to go away. Shinichi is left staring at the mansion
and Meiko's window sadly. He takes out the Toryo medallion
Meiko had given him from his pocket. He takes out his
picture and slips the medallion in the mail slot. He
punches the brick wall angrily and walks away.
In his now empty apartment, Shinichi calls Meiko. Since
her parents had left the house, the maid gives the phone
to Meiko who's still in her room. Meiko apologizes to
Shinichi because everything that had happened was all
her fault. Shinichi says that nothing was her fault
and that he's sorry he couldn't protect her. He tells
her that he resigned and that he's going to Hiroshima
to take over his father's business. He tells her that
he really loves her but he can't make her happy, that
she can find someone better than him. He wishes for
her happiness and says "Sayonara". Meiko is in shock.
She listens to the dial tone. The maid knocks on her
door and gives her the madallion that Shinichi had dropped
in the mail slot. Meiko takes it. She has a determined
look on her face as she opens her closet.
Miki is in her room, lying on her bed thinking about
Meiko and Na-chan again. You knocks on her door and
tells her that Meiko wants to talk to her. Miki doesn't
say a word. She's afraid because of what Meiko had said
before. You keeps on knocking. Meiko says that it's
OK. She starts talking to Miki behind the door and apologizes
because of what she had said. She tells Miki her story
about Shinichi.
Meiko: I met Namura-sensei in the high school library.
I was in Jr. High at the time.
~Jr. High Meiko with straight hair is looking through
books in the library. Shinichi stops her, telling her
that she shouldn't be in the library because it's only
for high-school students. Meiko was startled. She asks
if he's a graduate student but Namura says he's a teacher
and since no one comes to the library anyway she can
stay. He'll keep it a secret.~
Meiko: I noticed how gentle his smile was... Sensei
told me he came to the library on Wednesdays to do research.
So every week I said I came to read a book but actually
I wanted to see him. Everytime I saw him, I liked him
even more.
But then came the day when Meiko found his notebook
on the desk and he caught her looking at it. He told
her angrily that she has no right to look at it. Meiko
was sorry. The next Wednesday, she waited for him but
he didn't how up. She was afraid he was still mad at
her. To her surprise, he does show up and that's when
Meiko, crying, tells him that she loves him. Shinichi
asks how old she is. She answers that she's fifteen.
Namura takes the still crying Meiko in his arms and
he wonders if he has a "Lolita" complex. Meiko tells
him that she'll be an adult soon and if he could wait
for her.
Meiko apologizes to Miki about not telling her. "But
I can't tell everything. This is my personality..."
Meiko was afraid that if she told Miki, that Miki would
not like her anymore.
You offers to walk Meiko home but Meiko says a taxi
is waiting for her. You is surprised. He barges in to
Miki's room and he tells her that they are going after
Meiko because she's planning to elope with Na-chan.
Miki can't do it because she says that Meiko doesn't
need her anymore. You says that she's wrong and he grabs
her hand. They run to the subway.
Shinichi is surprised to see Meiko in the train station.
Meiko tells him that she wants to go with him. Because
she doesn't know what to do if he leaves. She and Shinichi
embrace. Shinichi thanks her for coming but he can't
take her because he can't support her and if he took
her with him she'd be unhappy. "You're young, beautiful
and smart. You can become anything you want to be...I
want you to find your true potential." Meiko disagrees
with him but she stops her rants. Meiko says that she
can wait for him and asks him if he'll come back for
her someday. Shinichi says he can't make that promise.
He says, "Sayonara" (Enter the sad music here) and heads
for the train. Meiko runs to him and kisses him. She
slips the Toryo medallion in his pocket.
Meiko runs after the train after it closes. She tries
to make Shinichi look at her but he doesn't.
Miki and You come and Meiko runs to Miki crying and
shaking. She tells Miki that Shinichi had said "no".
