Meiko and Satoshi

"Your heart is not open... so I must go.. The spell has been broken I loved you so..."
"Why, Why aren't you my Girl?" ~Satoshi

Maybe if Shinichi hadn't come back, maybe if Ryouko refused to talk to Shinichi about Meiko, maybe if Keiko hadn't seen him, maybe if Shinichi hadn't written that telegram, maybe if Meiko didn't love another so much... Maybe, it could have been different.

Miwa Satoshi supported Meiko in everything she did. He believed in her and encouraged her to write even when she thought that she could never do it. When she was frustrated, it was him that helped her take her mind off things when he took her to the arcade. A place where she had never been before.

When her story was finished, ~a story about a teenager in love with an older man but is torn because of a younger man~ it was Satoshi that she had asked to read it first. Satoshi after he finished reading returned it to her late one night. He told her couldn't wait until the next day because he had to tell her that he liked it very much. Meiko was pleased with this and when he asked her gently if she could put a place in her heart for him, she said "yes..." And to the surprise of Satoshi, Meiko kissed him.

And for a brief time, Meiko had thought she had forgotten about her "Sensei" because of Satoshi, whom she tells Miki, "allows me to be myself." Then when everything seemed to be going so well, Shinichi came back for a brief time from Hiroshima and Meiko after all could not forget him. Satoshi didn't want to let her go, "What if I say no...?" but he gave in..."Do what ever you want..." he said, walking away. She told him she was sorry later on but he told her that she shouldn't apologize to him because it would hurt him too much.

Satoshi accepted her feelings but because of his persistent nature, he always managed to make her go with him almost anywhere. From being together at a dance during Christmas (where he gave Meiko a red dress as a present), to New Years at the Shinto temple, and then together at the ski resort. And it was him that entered her story in a writing contest and made Meiko the center of attention because she won.

It was Satoshi that put his anger out on Shinichi because Shinichi was breaking Meiko's heart. It was Satoshi that told Shinichi that he was a cruel man and a coward because he was playing with the hearts of two women that loved him deeply and was hiding his feelings for Meiko. It was Satoshi and Ryouko, both of whom now had their hearts broken, that put the pieces back together again.

And that was the end. Meiko was gone, and Satoshi had given up...there was nothing else he could do... Their talk in the library after the Hiroshima incident was bittersweet. I almost expected him to cry after he left her in the library but he didn't. Although sad, he was still his good natured self again.

It's this couple that the majority of people wished could have been more and I agree. Satoshi was always there, he always encouraged her, he always believed in her and he was always so understanding.... But I guess not all stories end in a happily every after.

Poor Satoshi-san. :(
